In a blog post by Johanna Voolich Wright, Vice President, Product, Google Workspace, the tech giant Google has announced that it is set to introduce a significant upgrade to Workspace, which will integrate its generative AI models into almost every aspect of its productivity suite. Alongside this, new developer solutions will be introduced, allowing developers to access Google’s foundational models, such as the 540 billion-parameter PaLM large language model for multiturn chats, through an API and new low-code tools.
Initially, Google is releasing the first version of the product to what it typically refers to as “Trusted developers.” Unfortunately, this limits access to the fantastic tools and prevents them from being widely available. The general public will have to wait until Google opens the doors for anyone who wishes to try out these tools.
At the time of this announcement, OpenAI had also released GPT-4, a robust multimodal model capable of processing both text and image inputs and generating textual outputs. As Microsoft is heavily behind OpenAI, the race to be first in the AI space is heating up especially between MIcrosoft – through OpenAI and Google as the front runners in this space .
Google notes that for almost 25 years, it has been developing helpful products that people use every day, such as Search and Maps, as well as Gmail and Docs in Google Workspace. According to the company, the progress made in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) has been transformative in building products that have earned a valued place in people’s lives. The company states that across its productivity suite, advances in AI are already helping 3 billion users save more time with Smart Compose and Smart Reply, generate summaries for Docs, look more professional in meetings, and stay safe against malware and phishing attacks.
And now, it announced, it’s making it possible for Workspace users to leverage the power of generative AI to enhance. To kick off this initiative, the company has unveiled a first set of AI-powered writing features in Docs and Gmail, which will be made available to trusted testers.
Google is emphasizing the importance of providing a high-quality, secure, and scalable communication and collaboration suite through their Workspace platform. They highlight their extensive experience in artificial intelligence (AI) and productivity and acknowledge the need for careful consideration, experimentation, and incorporating user feedback when building AI-powered features.
Furthermore, Google stresses the importance of protecting user privacy and providing robust data governance controls for their customers. They are indicating that they take responsibility for safeguarding against the abuse of their platform and providing a secure environment for their users to collaborate and communicate.

Johanna Voolich Wright concludes the blog by saying that the best is yet to come, affirming that “AI-based capabilities get better with human feedback.” By this, he confirms that the new experience will be taken through the trusted user program. They will begin with English in the US. Based on the feedback from this program, the new features will be rolled out gradually to “small businesses, enterprises, and educational institutions in more countries and languages”
